A New Chapter of Life!

It's been just over 2 years since I last posted, and our family has grown by 1 since then.  We now have 3 boys, 5 years and under.  Abishai is 5 years, Micaiah is 3 and a half, and Asher is 11 months old.  Now that I've started homeschooling Abishai's Kindergarten year, I want to begin blogging again––to document our journey and look back on later.  Here are a few photos of our first couple of weeks of Kindergarten.  I didn't have an official start date. I began with one subject and kept adding another over a period of days.  I didn't want to overwhelm Abishai or myself with a drastic change.  He barely noticed a change at all.   I wonder if he even knows he's learning.  He seems to just go with the flow and I am happy with that.  Sometimes the best part about learning is when you don't even know it's happening.
Abishai coloring and cutting out Denari (Roman coins) from our Bible lesson on The Woman and the Lost Coin (Luke 15:8-10).  We glued them onto thin cardboard so that they would be more durable.

We then did a "sweep" with paint brushes to find 10 lost coins and discover a secret message which Abishai wrote down on a piece of paper.  The message was "He Is Joyful".
This is Micaiah choosing which colour of felt he wants to make his coin pouch out of to keep his Roman coins in.  He chose blue.
                                               Abishai sewing on his button.
 The finished product...
     ...with the coins inside.

Later that day, Micaiah helped me to make Swish chard soup for supper. Yum!
In the evening the boys rode their bikes.  Micaiah learned to ride his two-wheeler for the first time.

In addition to the three R's (reading, writing & arithmetic), one of the things we did in our second week was shred crayons––to melt inside of wax paper. We tried to make stain glass praying hands to remind us to "always pray and never give up," which is from the Bible story of the Persistent Widow (Luke 18:1-8).  The hands didn't turn out very well, so I didn't take a picture of them.

A Winnner!

We have a winner!  And the loaf of spelt bread goes to Tami Jo!  Congratulations!

"In the home and by the way" is found in Deuteronomy 6:7, but to get the whole context I've written out verses 4-9.  (can also be found in Deut. 11:19, which was Tami Jo's guess)
I like the idea of using the everyday moments that happen in your life to talk to your kids about God, like in the house or on a walk to the park.  This is what I will strive to do as a mom and home educator.

"Hear, O Israel! The LORD is our God, the LORD is one!
You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.
These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart.
You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house
and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up.
You shall bind them as a sign on your hand and they shall be as frontals on your forehead.
You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates."

Introduction & Giveaway

Welcome here,
This blog is a journal of my adventure as a stay-at-home mom and our home-education experience.  My husband and I have two beautiful, fun-loving boys: Abishai (2 1/2 years old), and Micaiah (1 year old).  We live in Winnipeg, love Jesus, and being with each other.  Thanks for reading!

Giveaway:  My husband came up with my blog-title and I liked it right away.  But what is "In the home and by the way" alluding to? Hint: it's from an ancient book. I'll bake a fresh loaf of spelt bread, made with organic flour that I milled myself for the first Winnipegger with the right answer.  Good luck!
